Google Surveys

SurveyMonkey and Zoomerang may be popular online survey tools, but Google Surveys may win the Online Survey Surprise of the Year Award!

Why? Here’s my story …

I’ve been putting off creating a survey for a state-wide professional organization for several weeks now, thinking that I would ultimately have to break down and dedicate time to learn one of the two popular survey tools. That’s what I used to think … until about 1 am this morning. I fell upon a super easy Google Docs application that changed my thinking completely.

I was watching a YouTube video on Google Grants. When the video ended, there was a survey link …

When I clicked on the shortened link above, I was redirected to this site …

https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dHBEbmxNUFpPdEpvamE0QW44ZE9oaHc6MA..

I hadn’t seen the “Spreadsheets.google.com” URL before, so this peeked my interest immediately. I scrolled down to the bottom of the webpage and noticed a “Powered by Google Docs” link just below the “Submit” button.

I clicked on the “Google Docs” link … and wala! There it was … an alternative online survey tool that rivals the competition.

Since my job was to create a presentation evaluation, I tested the new survey platform by creating my first presentation survey.

It was super easy to create (instructions are below in fact). When I finished, there were 3 easy ways to share the survey …

  1. Emailing (you can even include the entire survey in the body of the email message)
  2. Giving Out a Link
  3. Embedding Code Into A Website (simply cut-and-paste the HTML code into your website or blog)

Wow! That was super easy!

This was the solution to my survey needs that I kept putting off for so long.

Now, I want to be clear that Google doesn’t actually call this feature “Google Surveys” … at least not, yet. I’m calling it that. It’s part of the Google Docs product. Maybe Google will like the idea of Google Surveys, though, and run with it.

If you’re an educator, business consultant, project designer, or anyone who needs to evaluate a product or service or assess the needs of your audience, the Google Surveys feature is super easy to learn from your Google Docs platform. Plus, it’s FREE!

I’ve created a step-by-step guide for how to create a Google Survey. Of course, I’m paying the price today because I didn’t get to bed until 3 am. But, with a discovery like this … it’s well worth sharing and getting a little less sleep.
